Welcome.
A former award-winning museum professional and puppetry artist, Susan Bass Marcus writes novels, short stories, and recently a short illustrated book of her beloved cartoon character, Gerty. Essays and musings appear here in the WordPress blog, “Susan Bass Marcus Writes,” https://susanbassmarcus.net, and all her books are available on amazon.com.
Marcus is also a cartoonist about contemporary life; through her drawings, women from a variety of situations express their opinions and share their reactions to current events.
Marcus latest, Gerty’s Way, published in 2024, is about a savvy and sympathetic senior who meets life’s ups and downs with strength and joy.
The Wrong Move and Other Stories, published in 2023, is an anthology of five stories following different women as they face bizarre or unusual challenges, from burial praactices to a voyage to Mars on a medical mission.
In 2015, Marcus published her first novel, Malevir: Dragons Return, which had its origin in her oral storytelling and puppet theater work. Long a fan of dragons and other magical creatures, Marcus crafted the world of Dragonwolder and populated it with dragon clans, an enigmatic menace called the Malevir, many sprites, goblins, beleaguered humans, and a few giants. That writing experience resulted in the 2018 publication of
a sequel, Where Dragons Follow: Return of the Malevir, a tight, driving narrative with a small cast of characters and a strong story line. Marcus’ illustrations, including a map of Dragonwolder, boost the characters’ images and set the narrative’s tone.
Booksellers can order the works through Ingram, but they are also available on Amazon.com https://www.amazon.com/Where-Dragons-Follow-Malevir-Dragonwolder/dp/1732143404
