She Talks Mostly to Herself

“I’ll get to work–just as soon as I put in that load of laundry. What? My New Yorker came? I’ll speed read the cartoons, then get back to my laptop. . . .

That article was great. How does he know so much about so many things? . . .

Whew! I’d better sit down right now and write. Wait–where did I put my pad? Drat, my pen went dry. . .

Look at all these old drawings I stored in the pen drawer. Ah, this one. . .and this one. I could draw then . . .

Well, shouldn’t have been side-tracked by stuff I did 30 yers ago. Now I’m ready. Got my pen and lined paper pad . . . Cripes! It’s time to make supper. Have to do it now. Can’t stay up late. Early doc appointment tomorrow . . .

Oh, no! The laundry. The pot won’t boil for another ten minutes . . .

I washed a lot more clothes than I remember. . .Oh, the pot’s half boiled away–add another two cups of water. Where did I put that box of pasta? . . .

While the sauce cooks, I’ll write the first paragraph, but first I’ll set the table. That’ll save time. . .

Geesh–that cooked fast. Honey, supper’s ready . . .

You’ll wash up? Thanks. I’m so tired. The paper will wait until tomorrow.”

  1. Je suis tres presse they (the retired) say. Why, they ask.  Retirement does not include the luxury of servants to do the tasks of just plain living. That is, unless you are a billionaire or a high level millionaire. At least these are good excuses for the distractions that curiosity about the world around one causes in the “scheduling department”. Actually, wouldn’t Gerty who is behind all this angst agree?

  2. The universe is conspiring against you!

Rage, rage against the distractions thrown against you.

Keep a small notebook and gel pen with you at all times, so you can at least write down scraps of ideas and prose.

    1. Brian. Thank you for commenting. Oh, this is not about me. Is it? After all, I just wrote this. I forgot to tell our group that I have started writing narratives for the Gerty drawings. Some poems. Some observations. Some quotations. All fun.
